Why it gets messy
Years of kit packs end up in one big graphics folder: the same kit three times, odd file names, folders named after the pack instead of the club, and several config.xml files fighting over the same kits. The game keeps working until one day a kit simply stops showing.
The layout that works
Sort by kit type first, then by country and club. Each club folder has its own config.xml, so a change in one club never breaks another.

One naming pattern
Every file follows club ID_kit type.png, like 322_home_3d.png or 322_gk_away_3d.png. The club ID is the one Football Manager uses, so the name alone tells you which club and kit it is.
Keep it safe
- Don't delete: move the kits you don't want to a Leftovers folder without a config.xml, so they can never override your choices.
- Rename old config.xml files to config.old.xml instead of deleting them.
- Make the changes with Football Manager closed.
Do it in three clicks
Kit Folder Mapper does all of the above for you. Choose your graphics folder, review what it found (kits, duplicates, unknown clubs) and press Organize my kits. It knows more than 70,000 clubs offline, so every kit lands in the right country and club folder.
